Selena Gomez did not take home any hardware at the 2014 American Music Awards.
But the young artist did likely put on the most memorable performance at the annual event.
She took to the stage to sing her latest track, "The Heart Wants What It Wants," a single Selena has admitted was written about her tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber.
As Gomez sang emotional lyrics ("Hand over heart, I’m praying, that I’m gonna make it out alive…”), a video played in the background of a concealed shadow of a male.
This guy was resting his palms against a clouded glass panel, seemingly depicting Bieber himself.
As the performance concluded, Selena’s eyes welled up with tears and she started to cry.
Cameras then cut to Taylor Swift, never a huge fan of Gomez dating Bieber, who also had tears in her eyes as she peered sympathetically at her close friend from the audience.
Emotional stuff all around.

VIEW GALLERYGomez recently admitted on Ryan Seacrest’s radio program that Bieber was the subject of the single and also a fan of it.
"He thought it was beautiful," Selena told the famous host. "I think it was really hard. I think he was a little jealous of the video guy at first [in the video].
"Honestly, music is an expression, and if you will be that voice for these girls, there are some people that feel this. This is universal."
