After three seasons with the team, Nicholas Latifi will be departing Williams. But for where? It is not clear yet, but rumours have been ripe about a potential switch to IndyCar, and more specifically, to Chip Ganassi Racing. Another option could be a racing series like Formula E, but there’s no saying what the Canadian will choose to do yet.
As per GiveMeSport, Latifi said: “Honestly, I’m still not committed to anything. I haven’t signed anything. I’m still not any further along in having concrete news to share. I saw the news over the past days that I’ve already signed a contract to race in IndyCar which I found a little bit funny.”
But he did concede that he has been in talks with ‘a few different teams’: “But I’ve spoken to a few different teams in different categories and I’ve still not said to myself, ‘okay, it’s this or nothing.’ In a way, it’s a bit, annoying is not the word, but obviously most of my focus is still on finishing off the rest of the year on as high a note as possible.”

Who will replace Nicholas Latifi at Williams?
There have been rumours about Nicholas Latifi being replaced for a long time now, even before the Italian Grand Prix perhaps put the final nail in the coffin. In that race, Nyck de Vries, who was replacing Alex Albon, finished P9, scoring two points. Which meant he was above Latifi in the standings until the Canadian scored points in Japan.
de Vries had long been rumoured to be a potential replacement for Latifi. He knew the car well – having driven it in FP1 of the Spanish Grand Prix, and was also connected to Mercedes. But the door opened for him at AlphaTauri, and now there’s no chance about him joining Williams.
Now, the frontrunner seems to be Logan Sargeant, something Mark Webber thinks is the case as well. He’s American, and F1’s owners, Liberty Media would certainly want him in the sport. But he needs to finish P3 or above in the F2 championship to have the necessary amount of super license points.
But there’s also Mick Schumacher, even if that seems dependent on what happens with the Logan Sargeant points situation. The German has no contract for 2022, and Gene Haas had outrighted stated that they want him to score points to secure his future. But the team have scored 0 points for more than 3 months now, since Austria. It’ll be interesting to see how the situation develops.
