INDEPENDENCE, Oregon (KBOI) — Grant Hedrick found more than just success at Boise State.
He also found a future.
“Coach Petersen had all the freshman go on a ride-along with the Boise Police Department,” Hedrick said through a phone interview on Friday. “That’s when I thought it was something I’d want to do as a career.”
After playing for the Broncos from 2010-15, Hedrick is back in his hometown of Independence, Ore. and working as a police officer for the town of around 9,000 people.
“There’s a lot of stuff that goes on in a small town that I was surprised about which is exciting,” Hedrick said. “It’s not all like a movie or Cops.”
It’s a different type of gridiron, but one that has plenty of similarities with the game of football.
“Working with your coworkers, working with people, dealing with criticism - especially now,” Hedrick said. “All the ups and downs of the job. All those go hand in hand with football.”
And though Hedrick left Boise, the City of Trees is still with him.
“I miss everything about the city and the community and the program but I definitely keep it close to my heart for sure.”
Independence is about 30 minutes from Corvallis, so Hedrick plans to be in the stands for the first time since 2009 when Boise State plays at Oregon State. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. MST. It will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.
