BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — A Boise man who went viral after he was photographed hanging with one arm from the Senate balcony at the U.S. Capitol has turned himself into local authorities.
CBS2 News can confirm that Josiah Colt voluntarily surrendered at the Ada County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday afternoon at about 4 p.m. Before he arrived at the sheriff's office he told CBS2 News' Emri Moore that it was the right thing to do.
He turned himself in to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, a spokesperson for the FBI said.
It’s unclear exactly what charges Colt is facing at this hour, however, the FBI on Saturday did post a photo of Colt hanging in the chamber asking for the public’s help “identifying those who made unlawful entry.”
Colt did not talk with CBS2 as he went inside the Ada County Jail nor did his representative.The Ada County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Colt is being held inside the jail on a federal US Marshal’s hold.
Before he turned himself into authorities, Colt recorded himself inside a vehicle and apologized.
My intentions were pure going there and I was just trying to show support and be patriotic. But it turned into something that I'm not proud of.Colt says he's received "tons" of death threats since the photos and his name began making national headlines.
"And understandable so," he said. "I'm associated with a heinous, a whole bunch of horrible things that happened and I do not condone any of the violence that took place there. I never wanted it to happen..."
A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals says Colt will have his initial appearance in federal court in Boise on Wednesday.
