BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) — A 27-year-old Boise man says he found himself locked inside a Boise Ross department store late Wednesday night.
And, he's not too happy about it.
"It was quite terrifying," said Luke Savage, a local carpenter. "I didn't get any sleep last night because I was so worked up."
Savage says he went to the Federal Way store in southeast Boise at about 10:20 p.m. (the store closes at 10:30 p.m. according to hours posted at the front of the store though the company's website says 11 p.m.). He was looking to buy some shoes, underwear and some other miscellaneous items before he moves to Sun Valley for a job.
"I'm walking toward the dressing room and right as I was walking down the main center aisle all the lights turn off," Savage said. "I immediately yelled 'hello, hello can someone please answer me?'"
Savage says he went to the front of the store to see if anyone was at the front registers closing down.
Then the motion sensors went off.
Savage walked around the store trying to think of a way out. He saw the emergency doors, but was worried it would make things worse.
"I didn't want to set off the sprinklers and ruin the store," said Salvage, who said he didn't hear any overhead store announcement that the store was closing. "I was trying to think of the smartest way to go about it."
He then managed to reach someone at the Ross corporate headquarters.
"I had over an hour inside Ross so I had plenty of time to Google," he said.
Someone at corporate, he says, told him to call police.
"I didn't want them to think I was trying to rob the place because I was locked in," he said.
He posted a handful of videos on his social media accounts.
"Dear Ross, you locked me in your store," he said in one of his videos. "I think this deserves a pretty big discount considering I'm having to wait for the (expletive) cops to get here. I want my discount."
Nervously waiting, Savage says it took police about 30 minutes before they showed up. Officers asked him if he had any weapons (he had a work knife on him) and was patted down.
"I didn't get home until after midnight," he said.
Savage went back to the store Thursday morning to speak with management. He told KBOI 2News that he was offered a 20 percent discount until the store could complete an investigation.
The Federal Way store manager said he was unable to officially comment, however, he did confirm that an investigation into the incident is underway.
Boise Police told KBOI 2News that officers initially were called out to the store for the burglary alarm and later found the man locked inside.
"There was no evidence to indicate a crime had occurred," BPD said. "The man was able to get out of the store, and after speaking with officers was free to go."
